In paint protection film language, “tested” typically refers to factory validation. It is an important process which confirms the formulation integrity and manufacturing consistency of a product.
Factory R&D validation establishes the baseline
Before any film leaves production, it undergoes structured performance testing within certified quality management systems aligned to international standards, including ISO 9001 and automotive-grade TS16949.
Film testing includes:
- Physical and mechanical property assessment
- Peel strength evaluation
- Accelerated aging simulations
- Stone chip resistance
- Solvent and stain resistance
This confirms the chemistry performs as designed and that manufacturing standards are consistent. It is a necessary foundation.
But factory-tested does not automatically mean market-ready.
At Profilm, an additional in-market technical evaluation is carried out before a product is released — the additional scrutiny applied before a film reaches installers.
In-market evaluation applies additional scrutiny
Once products have passed that first step, Profilm conducts further evaluation at its technical facility at Dunsfold Park, UK. Dunsfold is a long-established engineering and testing site, developed for aviation performance trials. It remains a working industrial and automotive environment.
At this facility, we get “hands-on” to ensure that the films that go to market are installer-friendly and appropriate for the particular geography. Films are installed, removed and reinstalled. Panels are worked repeatedly. Performance is observed over time rather than one-off assessments.
Evaluation focuses on installation-critical characteristics:
- Stretch behaviour
- Flexibility under tension
- Adhesion response
- Optical clarity
- Fittability on complex curvatures
- Easy repositioning of the film
Films are subjected to washing cycles, temperature variation and environmental exposure. Assessment typically runs for several months prior to release. Product behaviour must be consistent and explainable before a film moves forward.
As one of Profilm’s technical services representatives notes, “Factory testing confirms the formulation. Our job is to understand how it behaves once installers start working with it.”
Factory validation confirms the product works in principle. In-market evaluation confirms it works in practice.
Accounting for market variation
Profilm products are distributed across regions with very different environmental conditions. Films behave differently under differing conditions, be it damp or cold UK & European workshops, or high-heat environments such as the Middle East, Africa or India.
Water hardness, humidity and installation challenges vary across territories.
Technical evaluation therefore considers how films respond across that range, and guidance must hold consistently across markets, not just within controlled conditions.
Experience behind the advice
So when installers contact Profilm’s technical team, they are speaking to individuals who have worked directly with the material during testing phases — installing it, adjusting solutions, and observing behaviour over time. Technical advice is grounded in direct experience rather than specification alone.
In this way, product behaviour is understood before wider release.
