When PPF moved out of defence and into automotive, the goal stayed the same: shield the paint from damage. Early films were thick, rigid, and noticeable. Today’s films are a different proposition entirely.

What has changed?

Three factors drive discolouration over time: the type and grade of the extruded TPU, the Topcoat’s stain resistance, and the adhesive specification. In the end, it boils down to a single factor: the careful selection of raw materials: TPU, topcoat and adhesive.

The core of any PPF is its thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). The purity and grade of the TPU determines how clear and stable the film remains over its lifetime. There are no shortcuts here; raw material quality is everything. With over 70 years of TPU development, Lubrizol is leading the premium TPU supply under the Estane range.

The topcoat is the film’s first line of defence against UV, chemicals, bird droppings, and road debris.

Soft top coats are flexible, easy to fit, and offer instant self-healing at room temperature — useful on complex curves and dark vehicles. The trade-off is that their microscopic surface structure can trap dirt over time, which may cause a dulled appearance, particularly in hot climates or on lighter paintwork.

Hard topcoats are heat-activated — minor scratches repair with warm water, sunlight, or a low-temperature heat gun. They tend to require more installation experience, though modern cutting software has largely removed this barrier. Many hard coat films also carry a hydrophobic layer, marketed as “nano-infused” or “integrated ceramic.” It adds genuine short-term hydrophobicity, but it will wear and a finishing treatment of flexible PPF coating as part of a regular maintenance schedule is recommended.

Leading manufacturers are now moving towards hybrid, softer topcoats that allow for hydrophobic properties while keeping the film flexible enough for a fast installation.

Adhesive is the last important raw material choice facing PPF manufacturers. With pattern accuracy improving, new medium to high-tack adhesives are being developed. How are durability and clarity measured?

Most manufacturers test films using ISO-governed accelerated weathering protocols, replicating UV, moisture, and temperature exposure beyond the product’s warranty period.

Colour stability is measured using the Delta E formula — a standardised method established by the Commission Internationale de l’Éclairage in 1976 — removing subjectivity from what would otherwise be a matter of opinion.

Where is PPF heading?

Beyond transparent gloss, the market now offers matte, satin, textured, colour-change, and colour-enhancing films, with more innovation on the way.

The fundamentals, however, remain constant: quality raw materials and manufacturing expertise are what separate a film that lasts from one that doesn’t.
